Tip 6: How Do I Simulate My BFW Recycle in Petro-SIM™?


I am modeling the steam system using the new energy unit operation modules available in Petro-SIM™. I am facing a problem on the boiler feed water (BFW) stream which introduces a recycle calculation in the system. Can I pass the deaerator temperature onto to the boiler feed water whiles allowing the mass flow rate to be calculated from the boiler balance?


Yes. You can use the Recycle block in the Petro-SIM™ to allow information to be passed forwards and backwards. Forward means in the direction of recycle, backwards means reverse to the direction.


The following steam model built in Petro-SIM includes a gas turbine, a HRSG, a boiler, steam headers, turbogenerators and steam users. 


In order to make the model converge, the boiler feed water coming from the deaerator needs to be connected to the boiler and HRSGs via a Recycle block. 

  1. Double click to open the recycle block.  On the Parameters tab, view the Tolerances page

  2. Specify the Transfer Direction for Flow as Backwards with a 0.1% tolerance

This allows the loop calculation to converge in a way that:

  • The flow rate of boiler feed water is calculated backwards from the steam system demand

  • The conditions and properties of the boiler feed water are calculated forwards from the deaerator operation
